Run for the Roses 5K

April 9, 2005

Prentiss, Mississippi- Once again perfect weather greeted more than two hundred runners and walkers Saturday at the Gateway to the Longleaf Trace, Prentiss.  The historic city, which recently celebrated its 100th birthday, was actually platted as a town after the Mississippi Central Railroad, now the Longleaf Trace, was completed through the area.  The 5K course winds through a residential area in the first mile, a long stretch of highway in the second, and back into downtown in the third, finishing on Main Street near the Gateway.

World famous runner Jeff Hathorn was again the Masters winner.  Other Pacers sighted included Becky Ryder, Nestor Raul Anzola of Columbia, South America, and Vicki Copeland, who won her age group.  (I placed third in a grinding performance that helped erase the disappointment of last month’s Crescent City Classic.)

After the race, runners and walkers enjoyed all manner of refreshments from the usual fruits and sports drinks to pork sandwich “nuggets”,  Keilbasa and elephant ears at the festival nearby.

The only thing I could add to Tony's report is about the good presentation of
the reduced Pine Belt Pacers delegation.  In the 5K run Jeff Hathorn was second
in 17:09, just one second behind the overall winner, Rob Oates.  Jeff took to
Bassfield the Masters award.  Richie Sumrall won the 40-44 category while Tony
Petrochelli Mozingo placed third. Jerry Worley finished third in the 45-49 age
group, and Vicky Copeland placed first in her age group.

In the 5K walk, Nestor Raul Anzola was the overall winner in the Masters
category with a time of 32:48.  Larry Sykes was first in the 60-69 age group
followed by Hollie Ryder.  Becky Ryder and Janice Curry also had a good
performance, setting PR's for the distance.  The Pine Belt Pacers were third
overall in the teams competition behind the Prissy Missys and the Port City
Striders.  Andres and David Anzola, Ted and Becky Ryder had a good time in the
