Herlon Pierce, Trail Manager/Executive Director Pearl & Leaf River Rails to Trails Recreational District Longleaf Trace Dear Mr. Pierce, As you are aware the 2009 Birthday Challenge held Saturday November 7, was a success. On the eastern end of the Longleaf Trace the Hattiesburg High JROTC and Red Cross Club provided 12 volunteers and adult leaders for three first aid stations. The stations were located at Jackson Road Station, Clyde Depot Station, and Epley Road Station, each station was equipped with first aid supplies and drinks provided by the Hattiesburg Coca Cola Bottling Company. There were four volunteers at each station three youth volunteers (ages 16 – 18) and one adult leader. Approximately 150 participants stopped by the stations for a pit stop. There were no serious incidents to speak of. However, ASAP and AAA ambulance services and the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office were notified prior to the event, just in case of any emergencies. The volunteers learned a little something about the Longleaf Trace and took home experiences and stories to tell. The folks from Ride South stopped at Epley Road Station and shared information about their odd looking yet very efficient recumbent bicycles. Equestrian riders stopped by for drinks and stories. The horses left a few gifts behind, for story telling as well. It was an event to be remembered by all. I believe the volunteers had a great time and will look forward to future events on the Longleaf Trace. Sincerely,
